If you’ve got a hole in your drywall — whether it’s from a doorknob, a plumbing repair, or a mystery your teenager can’t explain — you’re probably wondering what it’s going to cost to fix it before you call anyone.
We’re going to answer that question completely and honestly right here. No bait-and-switch. No ‘it depends’ without an explanation.
At Focus Handyman, we’ve repaired thousands of drywall holes across the Kansas City metro. We know exactly what drives the price up, what keeps it down, and what the final number looks like for most homeowners.
The Short Answer: What Most Kansas City Homeowners Pay
| Hole Size | Typical Price Range |
|---|---|
| Nail holes / small dings (under 1″) | $95 – $250* (minimum service call) |
| Small holes (1″ – 3″) | $250 – $350 |
| Medium holes (4″ – 8″) | $375 – $650 |
| Large holes (9″ – 12″) | $675 – $850 |
| Multiple holes (same room) | $500 – $950+ |
| Quarter panel replacement (16″x49″ section) | $600 – $800 |
| Half panel replacement (4’x4′ section) | $900 – $1100 |
| Full panel replacement (4’x8′ section+) | $1200 – $1400 |
NOTE: The prices above are typical per-repair ranges, and very small repairs are often completed along with other drywall repairs or handyman work. In most cases, homeowners have more than one nail hole, ding, or small repair, so the total visit price usually meets or exceeds the minimum service fee when bundled.
What’s Actually Included in That Price?
When you hire Focus Handyman to repair a drywall hole, here’s what you’re getting:
- Proper patching material — mesh tape, joint compound, backing boards where needed
- Feathering and blending — not just filling the hole, but making it disappear into the surrounding wall
- Texture matching — this is where most DIY jobs fail and where we earn our fee
- Light sanding and prep — ready for you to paint, or we can paint it too
- Cleanup — drywall dust is real; we contain it and clean up after ourselves
What’s not included by default: paint. If you want us to paint the repaired area or the full wall to match, that’s an add-on we’re happy to quote.
The 6 Factors That Determine Your Final Price
1. Size of the Hole
The size of the hole matters, but so does how deep the repair goes. A small surface ding may only need filler and sanding. But once drywall has to be cut out, braced, patched, taped, mudded, sanded, and textured (if present), the repair becomes much more involved. Even a small drywall patch can take several hours and possibly a couple of trips because it usually requires multiple coats of joint compound, with dry time between coats.
2. Number Of Coats & Dry Time
This is one of the biggest things homeowners do not always see. Drywall repair is not just one coat of mud and done. Most patches require two to three coats to properly build out, feather, and blend the repair. Fast-setting drywall compound “Hot Mud” can shorten the working time, but it still needs time to firm up, dry, be sanded, and be ready for texture. On some repairs, we may use fans or heat to help the drying process, but proper drying time between each coat is still part of getting a clean finished result.
3. Texture Matching
This is the most skilled part of drywall repair, time-consuming, and the most underestimated by homeowners. Kansas City homes have a wide range of textures:
- Smooth Finish – requires more up-front finish work but no texture applied
- Orange Peel — moderate difficulty
- Knockdown — requires skill to match; adds time and cost
- Skip Trowel — hand-applied, hardest to match perfectly
- Popcorn ceiling — separate category for ceilings only; we quote these individually
If your texture is complex, expect the higher end of the range. If your texture is smooth or light orange peel, you’re likely toward the middle.
4. Number of Holes
Multiple holes in the same room are significantly more efficient to repair together. If you have 6 holes from a TV mount, a doorknob, and a past plumbing repair — book them all at once. You’ll pay less per hole than scheduling three separate visits.
5. Location in the Hole
Where the drywall damage is located can have a major impact on the price. A hole in the middle of a flat wall is usually more straightforward than a repair on a ceiling, inside corner, outside corner, wall-to-ceiling transition, or area tight against wood trim. Outside corners often require corner bead repair or replacement. Inside corners may require corner tape repair, and repairs where the wall meets the ceiling may involve both wall finish and ceiling texture in the same repair area. If the damage is tight against baseboard, casing, crown molding, or other wood trim, the trim may need to be removed and reset to properly access and finish the drywall repair.
6. Hidden Damage
Occasionally, a hole reveals something behind the wall — mold, water damage, or insulation issues. If we open a repair and find something unexpected, we stop and show you before proceeding. We never just cover it up. This is rare, but it happens, and we want you to know our policy upfront.
Why You Shouldn’t Hire the Cheapest Bidder for Drywall Texture Work
We’ll be direct about this: drywall patching is easy if you have the proper tools and experience, which can take years to develop. Drywall texture matching is not as easy as patching drywall holes on a smooth wall.
We’ve been called to fix other contractors’ drywall patches more times than we can count. The patch is solid, but the texture looks like a different planet than the rest of the wall. At that point, you’re paying twice.
Our technicians are trained specifically in texture matching. We keep multiple texture materials and application methods on our trucks. We take photos of the existing texture before we start. We don’t guess.
DIY vs. Hiring a Pro: When It Makes Sense
We’re not going to pretend you can’t patch a small hole yourself. You can.
DIY makes sense when:
- The hole is under 2 inches
- Your wall has a smooth finish
- You’re willing to sand, prime, and repaint the area yourself
- You have time for multiple coats and drying time
- You have the proper tools, experience, or confidence to do the work safely
Hiring Focus Handyman makes sense when:
- The hole is larger than 4 inches
- Your repair has a textured finish
- The repair is on the ceiling
- You want it to be invisible, not just filled
- You don’t want to deal with drywall dust and multiple trips to the hardware store
- You don’t have the proper tools, experience, or confidence to do the work safely
How Our Pricing Process Works
You just read our actual pricing ranges for drywall repair in Kansas City. That’s intentional — we believe you deserve to know what something costs before you ever call anyone.
Here’s why we publish ranges instead of exact prices: drywall repair cost depends on your specific texture, hole size, and what’s behind the wall — things we can only confirm in person. The ranges in this article cover the vast majority of situations, and the factors we outlined above will tell you where your job likely falls.
Here’s what happens when you’re ready to move forward:
- Schedule an estimate — we come to you, assess the repair, and give you a firm written price
- You approve it — no work starts until you say yes
- We complete the repair — typically same day for most standard holes
- We clean up — and you inspect before we leave
No surprises. No hidden fees. And no need to wonder what something costs before you call — because you already know.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you match my existing texture?
In most cases, yes. We’ve matched hundreds of texture types across Kansas City homes. Occasionally a texture is so unique or aged that a perfect match requires painting the entire wall — we’ll tell you that upfront.
Do I need to paint after the repair?
Yes, the repaired area will need paint to be completely invisible. We can prime and spot-paint as an add-on, or paint the full wall if you prefer a seamless finish.
How long does it take?
Small to medium holes: typically, 2-4 hours on-site, one visit. Larger repairs that require multiple mud coats may require a second and sometimes a third visit for final texture and finish.
Do you repair ceiling drywall?
Yes. Ceiling repairs are quoted separately and run higher than wall repairs due to the difficulty of overhead work and texture matching. Please see our Drywall Ceiling Repair Cost Article for that information.
What if there’s mold or water damage behind the hole?
We stop, show you what we found, and give you options before proceeding. We never cover up damage.
Is there a discounted price if you repair multiple drywall holes during the same visit?
Yes. When multiple drywall repairs are completed during the same visit, we can often bundle the work together and reduce the overall cost. While one repair is drying, our technician can work on another, which saves time, reduces repeat setup and travel, and makes the job more efficient. The more efficiently we can complete the repairs together, the more value we can pass along to you.
Are your drywall repairs covered by a warranty?
Yes. Our drywall repairs are backed by Focus Handyman’s 3-year workmanship warranty. If an issue develops that is related to our workmanship, we’ll come back and make it right.
