I’m Richard Tooley, Focus Handyman’s founder, a business specializing in small and odd jobs, including services for drywall repair, interior painting, assembly, hanging items, minor plumbing and electrical, and many additional services. Before I delve into the details of our amazing handyman business, let me briefly introduce myself and my background.

My Journey

I worked as a contractor for over three decades, serving residential, commercial, and industrial clients. With over 35 years of experience in the construction industry, I have encountered numerous clients. I witnessed a concerning decline in the lack of desire for contractors to perform small repair jobs and poor-quality workmanship across all construction trades. This decline was primarily due to most companies’ growing reliance on subcontract labor. We decided not to use subcontract labor to maintain a higher work standard. Drawing from my extensive personal experience, thorough research, and countless building inspections spanning three decades, I discovered that most buildings, approximately 8 out of 10, were built incorrectly, not per the industry standard specifications. It was evident that a change was needed. Hence, I shifted my focus towards helping property owners inspect, repair, and maintain their existing properties, aiming to reduce their maintenance-related expenses by up to 50%.

Transitioning to a New Chapter

After 35 years in the construction industry, it was time for a fresh challenge. Through my years in business, I noticed that property owners often faced difficulties finding reliable repair contractors who were responsive and willing to take on small jobs. Even when a few companies did respond, they often preferred larger projects and were reluctant to handle small and odd jobs and repairs. I had the same experience when I tried to hire a local painting company to paint a single room in my home but found no takers, and again when I tried to hire a contractor to repair my wood fence. Faced with this dilemma, I ended up performing the repairs myself. Inspired by this experience, we established Focus Handyman to extend the same exceptional service to all property owners seeking small and odd jobs such as drywall repair, interior painting, assembly, hanging items, and minor plumbing and electrical services.
